Gold purity is measured in karats; 24 karats is examined as pure gold. Your typical gold jewelry is usually in the range of (10K)10 karats, (14K)14 karats, and (18K)18 karats. This means that it was mixed with other alloys to enhance the pigment and hardness of your jewelry, making it more durable and lustrous.
It is advised to regularly clean your jewelry as you wear them more frequently, as there is almost always a build up of gunk if not taken care of properly.
No Need to Worry!
This gunk is very easy to clean with your typical household items; these items should not damage your gold jewelry if used properly!
Items required:
- Warm Water
- Soft Toothbrush
- Dish Washing Detergent
- Bowl
- Microfiber/Towel/Soft Tissue
- (optional)Ammonia
AVOID USING AMMONIA IF YOU HAVE GEMSTONES, PEARLS, OR ENHANCED DIAMONDS. KEEP AMMONIA AWAY FROM BLEACH, THESE TWO CHEMICALS CREATE A TOXIC GAS WHEN MIXED TOGETHER.
Directions:
- Fill the bowl with warm water
- Put 1-2 drops of dish washing liquid into the bowl, or enough to make minimal suds
- (optional)Put 2-3 drops of ammonia.
*USE WITH CARE* General rule is to use 1 part ammonia to 6 parts water. - Let your gold jewelry soak in the solution for 5-10 minutes to loosen any dirt and/or grime.
- Pick up your gold jewelry and gently bristle at the corners, edges, and grooves with the soft toothbrush.
- (optional)Set the hand-cleaned gold jewelry back into the solution for another 5 minutes to flush out any remaining loose grime.
- Transfer the clean gold jewelry into another bowl of warm water to rinse off any excess cleaning solution.
- If possible, refrain from rinsing with the sink because loose stones could fall out, and/or brittle gold from normal wear-and-tear could break.
- Dry with soft towel, preferably a micro-fiber cloth/towel.
